Christian Tetteh Badger, used the occasion to call for a renewed commitment to grassroots governance, lamenting that the inactivity of Unit Committees had weakened local governance and reduced public confidence in the system.

According to him, many Unit Committees have become invisible in their communities, resulting in poor sanitation, weak enforcement of local regulations and declining citizen participation in local governance.

“We all have compromised ourselves and local governance is eluding our people. Let’s take this country seriously. Why should the gutters be choked when there are Unit Committees? Why should permits not be obtained when there are Unit Committees? Why should the markets be dirty when there are Unit Committees?” he questioned.

The MCE described Unit Committees as the “voice and Parliament of the people,” stressing that members must place the interests of their Communities above personal considerations.

“We are rather using the position for our own parochial interest to the detriment of the people. This must change under the reset agenda of President John Dramani Mahama.” he stated.

Hon. Badger urged Committee Members to engage regularly with residents, saying the people expected to hear from their local representatives and depended on them to champion development at the community level.

“Ghana is for the people and we, the Unit Committee, are for the people. Meet with them; they want to hear you. You carry the responsibility of the people on your head. Rise to the task,” he advised.

He further noted that the country was entering “a new dawn” and called on local leaders to reorient their mindset towards selfless service.

He also suggested that the Assembly intensify capacity-building programmes to help Unit Committee Members better understand and effectively discharge their responsibilities.

The MCE commended members of the Unit Committees for their active participation in the national clean-up exercise declared by President John Dramani Mahama following the devastating June 29, 2026 floods.

The Presiding Member of the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly, Hon. Daniel Dzadey, described the election as an important step in deepening grassroots democracy and strengthening local governance.

He reminded councillors of their statutory responsibilities, particularly in supporting revenue mobilization efforts of the Zonal Council and promoting environmental sanitation within their electoral areas.

Hon. Dzadey further urged members to perform their duties within the provisions of the Local Governance Act and other relevant Legislative Instruments, stressing that decisions and development projects must originate from the needs and aspirations of the people.

In his acceptance remarks, Hon. Abdul Rashid expressed gratitude to the councillors for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to justify the trust placed in his leadership.

He assured members that he would build on the progress already made in revenue mobilisation and sanitation while working closely with stakeholders to improve service delivery within the Council.

The event was attended by the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. John Nana Owo, Assembly Members, Management and Staff of the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly.

Source: onma.gov.gh

By Jeffrey De-Graft Johnson, AD IIB

The Abeka Zonal Council in the Okaikwei Central Constituency in the Okaikwei North Municipality has acclaimed businessman, Honourable Alhassan Abdul Rashid as its Chairperson.
