Badger said the programme was established to bridge the skills gap, create decent employment opportunities and promote inclusive economic growth.

“The programme is not merely about teaching trades. It is about restoring hope, building confidence, and creating pathways for sustainable livelihoods,” he stated.

He explained that the programme combines 30 per cent classroom instruction with 70 per cent practical workplace training under experienced trainers and master craft persons to ensure beneficiaries gain hands-on experience and industry-ready skills.

The MCE noted that the programme also sought to ensure inclusivity by providing opportunities for women, persons living with disabilities and youth from underserved communities.

He described the tools and equipment presented to the apprentices as symbols of opportunity, empowerment and independence.

“For many beneficiaries here today, these tools will become the foundation upon which successful businesses and careers will be built,” he added.

Hon. Badger urged the beneficiaries to use the equipment responsibly, remain disciplined and continue improving their craft in order to succeed.

He also commended the master craft persons and trainers for their dedication to mentoring the next generation of skilled workers and entrepreneurs.

The Municipal Coordinating Director, John Nana Owu, advised the apprentices to respect their trainers and take proper care of the tools given to them.

He noted that Ghana was gradually moving away from white-collar jobs towards vocation-driven employment.

The Achimota Mantse, Nii Ayibontey Adams II, encouraged the apprentices to take their training seriously and praised President Mahama for introducing the initiative to create jobs for the youth.

The Greater Accra Regional Coordinator of the National Apprenticeship Programme, Jones Klutse, recalled that President Mahama launched the programme in Tamale in April 2025 as one of the government’s flagship initiatives.

He said government was fully funding the training of apprentices under all the modules of the programme and also paying stipends to beneficiaries.

According to him, apprentices who successfully completed their training would receive start-up tools and certificates from the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, with all associated costs borne by government.

Mr. Klutse stressed that many countries had transformed their economies through skills training programmes and urged Ghanaians to embrace vocational and technical education.

He disclosed that the programme did not require prior educational qualifications or work experience for enrolment and revealed that government had invested more than GH¢300 million into the initiative.

The Presiding Member of the Assembly, Hon. Daniel Dzadey, said the programme reflected government’s commitment to bringing governance closer to the people under the reset agenda.

The Municipal Director of the Youth Employment Agency, Osman Mahmoud, speaking on behalf of the Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central Constituency, Mrs. Theresa Lardi Awuni advised the apprentices to remain disciplined and respectful towards their trainers.

He also appealed to trainers to exercise patience while mentoring the apprentices.

Former Assembly Member for Achimota, Majid Adams, described the programme as a major initiative by President Mahama aimed at helping Ghanaian youth acquire employable vocational skills for sustainable livelihoods.

Source: onma.gov.gh

By Jeffrey De-Graft Johnson, AD IIB

The National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) in collaboration with the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly has presented tools and equipment to apprentices and master craft persons as part of efforts to empower young people with employable skills and promote entrepreneurship.
