Christian T. Badger, who was part of the tour said the educational trip would help bridge gaps in the learning experiences of pupils by providing practical exposure beyond the classroom.

He noted that the tour also fostered interaction among pupils from different schools while promoting teamwork and social integration.

“I am excited about this visit because it has also given me the opportunity to thoroughly tour the zoo since its relocation to the Municipality,” he said.

Hon. Badger explained that the tour fulfilled one of the key objectives of the Bridging Histories Programme, which includes visits to historical and cultural sites such as chiefs’ palaces and other places of educational significance.

He disclosed that future activities under the Programme would include visits to Achimota School and the Achimota Palace to educate pupils on the history behind the naming of the community.

The Municipal Cultural Coordinator, Madam Juliana Ketteor, described the trip as highly educational, saying it would broaden the knowledge of the pupils and improve their academic performance.

“There are many animals and birds the children have only read about in books. Seeing them physically helps them understand and remember what they learn in class,” she said.

She expressed optimism that the pupils had gained valuable knowledge from the excursion and encouraged schools to continue organising similar educational activities.

Madam Georgina Akambasi, the Head of Culture and Tourism Unit of the Assembly also commended the initiative and proposed that educational tours should become part of the Education Directorate’s regular co-curricular activities, to be organised every school term.

The Officer in Charge of Operations and Stakeholder Relations at the Accra Zoo, Mr. Samuel Mensah, welcomed the collaboration between the facility and the Okaikwei North Education Directorate.

He noted that the Zoo has been located within the Municipality since 2006 and encouraged schools to establish Wildlife Clubs to promote conservation education among learners.

The tour was attended by officials of the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly, including Administrators and the Development Planning Officer.

Participating schools included Achimota School Basic 1, Nii Okine Basic school, Aggrey Basic School, SDA Basic School, Abeka II Basic School, Apenkwa Presbyterian School, among others.

Source:source.onma.gov.gh

By Jeffrey De-Graft Johnson, AD IIB

More than 40 pupils from various public basic schools in the Okaikwei North Municipality have participated in a one-day educational tour of the Accra Zoo as part of activities under the Bridging Histories Programme.
