OKAIKWEI NORTH MCE SETUP COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE ROYAL SWEET LIMITED

The Okaikwei North Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Boye Laryea said it is the responsibility of the Assembly to ensure the safety of the people in the municipality after visiting the Royal Sweet Limited on the 11th February, 2019 at the main factory in Bambolino-Lapaz.

The Chief Executive visited the factory together with the Coordinating Director Mr. Samuel Amoah, the Head of Sanitation Madam Josephine Gawu, and the Information Officer Madam Joana Janet Arries –Tagoe.

According to the Municipal Chief Executive, the visit came following a report on social media by the neighbors about activities of the factory which has become a problem to the people in the community.

The team went to check on the alleged fume that comes out of the factory’s chimney which is out of control and could be dangerous to the health of the people who lives around.

However, Mr. Yussif the Managing Direct of the factory expressed dissatisfaction of the story. He said: “circulation of the videos about the company on social media gives it a bad reputation, we have employed a lot of people from the community which contributes to development.”

He stated: “Environmental and Sanitation Team have visited the premises several times and they can attest to the fact that improvement has been made in the extension of the chimney, what is out there wasn’t exactly what is happening on the ground.”

Hon. Boye Laryea suggested that a five member committee will be set up comprising two representatives from the Assembly, one from the Member of Parliament, one from Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and one Opinion Leader from the community.

The committee will sit with the Factory heads to find a lasting solution to the problem.

Mr. Yussif explained: “I was expecting the visit by the Assembly. I will support the decision of the Assembly and I am ready to comply with the Assembly in order to keep my business and the community safe.”

The Managing Director of Royal Sweet Limited took the team to where the chimney was stationed for an assessment of the fume that comes out of it.

He said: “The chimney was extended trice since he took office as the Managing Director of the company in just six months which the Environmental Officer from the team affirmed his claim. Pictures of the chimney was taken after which the team left the premises.”
