OKAIKWEI NORTH MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY TO HELP IN SANITATION MANAGEMENT

The Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly (ONMA) has adopted a tough stance to tackle the sanitation issues to promote environmental hygiene in the municipality.

In a conscious effort to contribute its quota to making Accra the cleanest city as championed by the President His Excellency Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo,  the assembly, though relatively young having come into operation under a year, have keenly set its sights on clamping down on gross environmental misconduct by inhabitants of the area engaging its taskforce to prosecute the agenda.

In an interview, the Municipal Chief Executive of the area, Honorable Boye Laryea disclosed that some citizens within the municipality who have observed some development in the area have had the occasion to commend the assembly for the initiative.

He said one of his foremost policy priorities is good sanitation management which he intends to achieve engaging the citizens through participation and education, adding that road management would also come to play.

According to the Municipal Chief Executive, the Assembly undertakes clean up exercises every week in addition to the nationwide monthly sanitation exercise using its sanitation task force.

The assembly, he said has plans to position bins at vantage points in the municipality to curb the incidence of indiscriminate disposal in the area.

Addressing concerns of the public rubbish bins overflowing and defeating the intended purpose, he said to forestall the occurrence, the assembly is signing new contracts with refuse service providers who would collect the refuse on a timely scheduled routine.

He is certain that other assemblies will emulate the initiative to make Accra one of the cleanest cities.

In fulfillment of the social contract with the people in terms of the social and physical development, he said there was no doubt that some of the problems expected to be resolved by the people have existed for decades and the assembly does not have the funds or capacity to tackle them except to rely on central government’s intervention.

On revenue generation for which assemblies have been charged to be innovative, he said the assembly is now compiling data of business structures after which the agenda would be rolled out.

He urged businesses in the area to pay taxes on time, abide by the bye-laws, and be more responsible to help the assembly fulfill its mandate to them.
