ONMA Marks Green Ghana Day

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey on Friday joined the Municipal Chief Executive of Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly (ONMA) Mr Boye Laryea to mark Green Ghana Day.

The day is set aside to plant some five million trees across the country.

It is also another giant step by the government to ensure the country’s forest cover and the environment at large is protected.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Quartey said he and his entourage are in the Municipality to associate themselves with what he described as the “historic event.”

He stated: “I must be quick to add Mr. MCE, this will not be something for the media but indeed the Chief Director will write to all the MMDCEs in the Greater Accra Region, we will require a report from all the MMDCEs in Accra three months after today to tell us the status of the trees they planted today.”

The Greater Accra Regional Minister added:”Again, we charge all Assembly Members of the respective Electoral Areas in the entire 29 MMDAs to ensure that the trees that are planted in their respective areas do not die. If they die, we will write a query, they will have to answer.”

The Member of Parliament of the Ayawaso Central Constituency in the Greater Accra Region also made a passionate appeal to the Regional Director of Education to as a matter of urgency instruct all Metropolitan and District Directors of Education to ensure that trees that are planted in all schools in the Region are nursed.

Mr. Laryea in a message said the President’s vision of planting trees is laudable.

He assured that the Assembly is going to intensify the tree planting and keep an eye on the progress of the trees planted.

This he said would prevent people from uprooting the trees indicating that the laws will deal with all saboteurs.

Aside from Mr. Quartey and Mr. Laryea, some Chiefs in the Municipality as well as the Tesano Police Commander, Oduro Ananing took turns to plant trees to commemorate the day.
