Staff of the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly (ONMA) in the Greater Accra Region have received training on basic life support. The training organized under the auspices of the Human Resource Department (HRD) of the Assembly is among other things expected to equip staff on how to administer first aid in the event of an emergency. The workshop was also to enable staff to gain knowledge on how to detect early signs of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the necessary steps to be taken. Speaking at the program, Mr. Malik Nasir-Deen, the Manager of the National Ambulance Service at Lapaz said everyone including healthy people can collapse, the reason basic life support tips is necessary to everyone. He said issues of cardiac arrest is a health issue ravaging a lot of lives across the globe, indicating that nearly 70 to 90 percent of those who suffer Cadiac arrest die before getting to the hospital.Mr. Nasir-Deen noted that a person collapsing could be as a result of many reasons including underlining medical conditions, work stress, tiredness, accidents and head injury. He explained that a person’s best chances of recovery in the event of an issue is what happens from the time of the incident to the time of hospitalization. The Lapaz Ambulance Manager urged the staff to exercise and cut down the intake of junk foods in order to prevent a lot of disease. Mr. Nasir-Deen while praising the Municipal Chief Executive, Honourable Boye Laryea for his support to the Service urged the Staff to avoid placing prank calls to the call center of the Ambulance Service.
