Professional Dev’t Key For Teachers -Okaikwei North Education Director

The Director of Education for Okaikwei North Municipality Mrs. Cynthia Aboni says continuous professional development is key in order to improve on the learning outcomes of learners in schools.
According to Mrs. Aboni, continuous professional development is any type of learning one undertakes to increase knowledge, understanding and experiences of a subject area or role.
Speaking at the opening of the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Workshop at Achimota in Accra, the Okaikwei North Education Director indicated that CPD is an ongoing learning and development process from the Kindergarten through to the Senior High School level.
“CPD is an ongoing and planned learning and development process for teachers in the kindergarten, Junior High and Senior High School respectively.”
Mrs. Aboni further explained that CPD “is a concept introduced by the National Teaching Council to regulate the knowledge, practice, conduct, attitude skills, rights and obligations of the In-Service Teacher.”
She stated that teachers will be taken through the three main domain of topics which include: “Professional Values and Attitudes Professional Knowledge and Professional Practice.”
Mrs. Aboni was optimistic the participants will get the best out of the workshop, “to impact our work positively, and to improve on the learning outcomes of our learners.”
Mrs. Aboni added “In-Service Teachers are advised to take part in CPD programmes comprising upgrading and updating,”
All teachers who have completed the initial teachers training are assessed against the National Teacher’s Standards. These standards are designed to improve the quality of teachers’ delivery and students’ performance.
The 2008 Education Act (Act 778) established the National Teaching Council and it is responsible for establishing frameworks around teachers’ employment, continuous professional development (CPD) and periodic review of professional practice
