Residents within the Okaikwei North Municipality have been advised to take sanitation around their homes, offices and shops seriously.
According to Boniface Ashalley, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer (MEHO), it is their responsibility to ensure the cleanliness of their surroundings as the Assembly prepares to implement its sanitation by-laws from February 1.
The ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ initiative aims to enforce sanitation regulation within the Greater Accra region as part of the ‘Make Greater Accra Work’ programme being championed by the Regional Coordinating Council.
However, briefing journalists on day two of the public sensation by ONMA, Mr. Ashalley said some forty-two stores and houses have been engaged on the need to keep their surroundings clean on the first day of the sensitization.
He said for now, the Assembly through its Health Department is only engaged in awareness creation and sensitization stressing that effective February 1, 2022 offenders of the sanitation law will be punished.
Mr. Ashalley added that defaulters of the sanitation bye-law could serve a 6 to 18 months jailed term depending on the gravity of the offense.
The campaign spearheaded by the Environmental Health And Sanitation Department of the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly (ONMA) is a strong push by the Assembly towards realising this ambitious goal of ensuring environmental cleanliness.
