The Abeka District Court fined a woman for dumping refuse at unauthorized place in Nii Boi Town along the N1 highway.
According to reports gathered by the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly, some residents of the Municipality are found of dumping refuse indiscriminately at places especially along N1 Highway and into public drains.
The incident occurred on the 5th of May, 2019 at 1:40 a.m. and Wednesday 8th May, 2019 at 1:26 a.m. in Nii Boi Town on the N1 High Way.
The accused person, Madam Theresa Adofo who sells indomie at Nii Boi Town in the evenings was caught on camera by citizen vigilante dumping refuse on the street at Nii Boi Town under the cover of darkness.
According to the municipal prosecutor Mrs. Delight Dzansi, the video was sent to the Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit of the Assembly and upon thorough investigation, the accused person admitted to the offence.
The judge stated: “Since she has been caught on two occasions it means she is found of doing that which is contrary to the law.”
The prosecutor stated the position of the law and the accused was subsequently charged with the offence for Dumping Refuse at Unauthorized Place (street) Contrary to Section 56 SS (a) and (b) Act 851, Public Health act 2019 and brought before court on 25th May, 2019.
The accused pleaded guilty to the charge but she was fined the sum of Ghc1200 or face six months imprisonment with hard labour. In addition to the above, she signed a bond of good behaviour for one year or in default six months prison term.
