ONMA MCE, Others Unveil SMSH Dialysis And Eye Centres

The Municipal Chief Executive of Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly on Thursday, February 5, 2026, joined other dignitaries to launch a Dialysis and Eye Clinic of St. Michael’s Specialist Hospital (SMSH) in the Okaikwei North Municipality.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Christian Tetteh Badger, described the establishment of the dialysis and eye units as a major milestone in strengthening healthcare delivery within the municipality.

“The establishment of these critical units at St. Michael’s Specialist Hospital is not only a boost to the local health system but also a symbol of our commitment to ensuring that quality healthcare is accessible, affordable, and equitable for all residents,” he said.

He further assured that the Assembly remains committed to facilitating adequate resources for health infrastructure, human resources, and essential medical supplies, while ensuring equitable distribution of healthcare services across communities in the municipality.

Hon. Badger also highlighted the government’s commitment to improving healthcare financing, referencing the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, popularly known as “Mahama Cares”, initiated by President John Dramani Mahama to support patients suffering from chronic non-communicable diseases such as kidney and liver conditions.

According to him, the initiative reinforces government’s belief that effective healthcare delivery requires deliberate and sustained investment.

“The launch of the Dialysis Service and Eye Unit at St. Michael’s Specialist Hospital is therefore not an end in itself, but the beginning of a new era in healthcare delivery in our Municipality,” the MCE noted.

The Medical Director of St. Michael’s Specialist Hospital, Dr. Lawrence Sereboe, said the facility was established to provide healthcare services comparable to those offered by teaching hospitals in Ghana.

He noted that the hospital would serve as an alternative to the persistent “no bed syndrome” in major referral hospitals and assured residents that the dialysis unit would operate efficiently to meet the health needs of patients.

Dr. Sereboe further pledged the continuous supply of consumables and uninterrupted service delivery to ensure patients receive timely and quality care.

A Board Member of the hospital, Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong, described the launch of the dialysis and eye facilities as a significant step toward improving access to quality healthcare in Ghana.

He said since its establishment in 2023, the hospital had demonstrated excellence in service delivery, adding that the introduction of the new facilities reflects its vision and growing contribution to national healthcare.

Dr. Sarpong noted that kidney diseases remain a serious public health challenge, stressing that dialysis is often a matter of life and death for many patients.

He explained that the availability of the new dialysis service would reduce the burden on patients and their families while enhancing the hospital’s capacity to serve the wider community.

While commending the management and board of the hospital, he urged health professionals to always prioritise patient safety and dignity.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Ernest Konadu Asiedu, a Public Health Specialist at the Ministry of Health (MoH) , described the launch as a demonstration of collective commitment to strengthening Ghana’s health system.

He said the initiative reflects the power of innovation and public-private partnerships in advancing universal health coverage and equitable access to quality healthcare, regardless of geographical location or economic status.

The event was attended by the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Francis K. Mensah, Mrs. Akorfa Adu-Gamadeku, the Municipal Finance Officer, Hon. Daniel Dzadey, the Presiding Member of the Assembly, Honourable Assembly Members, Administrative Officers, Health Professionals, and other Community Leaders.
