The Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly is considering a plan to hand over management of the median along the N1 Highway to a company as part of efforts to tackle the growing sanitation challenges on the ceremonial route.
He noted that the N1, a major transnational highway linking Ghana to Côte D’Ivoire, Togo, Benin, and Nigeria, has increasingly become littered with plastic waste particularly polythene bags that often get trapped in the median.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Christian Tetteh Badger, made this known while speaking to journalists during the National Sanitation Day cleanup exercise held in Accra on Saturday, 4th October, 2025.
“The median of the N1 is not just a Green Stretch; it is a symbol of our city’s image. Unfortunately, it has become a dumping ground for plastic waste. The Assembly is therefore considering partnering with a private company to take responsibility for its maintenance and cleanliness,” Hon. Badger stated.
According to the MCE, the move forms part of broader measures by the Assembly to promote sustainable waste management under the Reset Agenda spearheaded by President John Dramani Mahama. The initiative seeks to foster cleanliness, environmental sustainability, and renewed community responsibility.
Hon. Badger further disclosed that the Assembly will soon embark on a massive public education campaign to discourage motorists and pedestrians from littering the streets, especially with plastic and rubber waste.
In addition, city guards and Sanitation Police will be deployed to arrest and prosecute offenders found disposing of waste improperly from vehicles, stores, homes located close to the N1 Highway
“As we clean our communities today, we must also change our attitudes. The responsibility to keep Accra clean is a shared one,” he emphasized.
Hon. Badger urged the public to treat the sanitation exercise not as a mere monthly ritual but as a collective civic duty by all to build a cleaner and healthier environment for future generation.
Saturday’s cleanup exercise saw active participation from Assembly staff, members of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Professional City Managers, Assembly Members, and residents. Shops and businesses were directed to remain closed until noon to ensure full participation.
Also, present at the cleanup exercise was Mr. Francis K. Mensah, the Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD), Mr. Salifu Seidu, the Deputy Director among other Heads of Department and Unit Heads who joined residents to demonstrate leadership and community commitment.
